It was our turn as a family to find the school which fit all of our impossible wants, needs and requirements for our 2 year old son. Yes…2 years old! It’s a crazy thought that in Barcelona you need to find your “forever” school for your precious children at an age where they are still using the baby swing and only just learning to balance on one foot! We had our eye on the school closest to our house not only because of proximity but also because it has recently implemented a teaching methodology which we love and think works with our little boy’s personality and way of learning. But then doubt creeps in that maybe we are being incredibly lazy as it is the closest school and the morning routine can be long enough without having to add a commute!
On we went with the obligatory 20+ open days to each of the schools in our catchment area. I have to admit to walking out of a few quite early on during the presentation section, but there were others which seemed like lovely schools, but just not quite what we were looking for.
The pre-inscription date loomed and we were yet to find a contender for our number 1 choice. I had originally thought this was lucky for us, but then realised that if they ended up being over-subscribed then it would be down to the lottery as to whether we got in…and we didn’t have a number 2 choice.
Most parents have all of this worry and anxiety to deal with and then also have to add the documentation aspect. We were very lucky that we have this part covered and could just focus on choosing the right school. As we all know, Spain LOVES its bureaucracy and school application time only confirms this!
Pre-inscription application handed in to our school of choice and then time to cross our fingers and toes. The day after pre-inscription closed to new applications I was up at the school asking what the numbers were…2 applications less than the amount of places available…PHEW, we were in. The subsequent email from the education department confirmed it and the 3 months of school visits, research and endless talking about it with my husband had been worth it!
After helping others with this process, it was good to go through it myself and experience it all first hand. Every other service which I offer has been tried and tested by me personally, but this was the last one we hadn’t yet gone through ourselves. A happy result for us, our son and a tick in the box 🙂
